World Animal Day
Oct. 4, 2022
World Animal Day aims to raise awareness of the need to protect and preserve the lives of all species.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change fights daily for the protection and conservation of ecosystems which include plant and animal species endemic to the Azores. The LIFE SNAILS project is an example of this, having as its main objective the conservation of three species of terrestrial molluscs: Plutonia angulosa, Oxychilus agostinhoi and Leptaxis minor, endemic to Santa Maria.
Land snails recycle forest nutrients, mineralizing the decomposing organic material on which they usually feed. Smaller species are more sensitive to environmental disturbances and can thus serve as indicators of harmful effects resulting from climate change.
Stay tuned to our social networks to find out more about these animals!
