Goal 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Over the past few years, disposable plastic packaging has increased exponentially. When they become waste, plastics end up fragmenting into microparticles that pollute the water and air, harm marine life and ultimately can be ingested by us.

We should avoid plastic production and using single-use products by opting for reusable bags and buying in bulk. In this way, we will decrease the number of disposable products and, consequently, the number of microplastics in the marine environment. In this way, we will contribute to the preservation of ecosystems.

To combat this problem, the Azorean Government has implemented measures to reduce single-use products and promote reuse and recycling, following the objectives of sustainable development, focusing on the principles of a green and circular economy, applying to the Region the EU legislation on the matter.
