LIFE IP AZORES NATURA promotes a briefing session on Corvo island

Sept. 20, 2022

LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project was doing fieldwork last week on Corvo island. During this visit, a briefing session was promoted for agricultural entrepreneurs about the conservation work that is being carried out on the island. In the session, the project addressed the importance of nature conservation for the community and the need to install fences to exclude cattle in the project intervention area – the Caldeirão.

All the surrounding area of Caldeirão do Corvo constitutes the largest hydrographic basin of the island, which is essential to supply the water to Vila do Corvo. In this area, there are peatbog habitat that can absorb large quantities of water and are extremely important for the purification of the air and water itself. Thus, it is essential to prevent the entry of cattle in these places by placing fences, preventing trampling and herbivory and increasing the preservation of these habitat. Consequently, the placement of these fences promotes the regulation of water resources, preventing floods, mudslides and erosion.

This meeting was attended by some people and entities related to the agricultural activity, where contributions were collected from the participants to benefit all parties and promote good communication between the local population, farmers and the project.

Through Action C13.2 “Minimizing agriculture negative impacts in N2000”, LIFE IP AZORES NATURA will promote similar sessions in other islands to inform farmers and interested entities about the respective conservation work of the project in agricultural areas.
