Construction of a shade house in Furnas Orchard
Within the framework of action C3.2 "In-situ conservation" of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, which foresees the improvement of the conservation status of endemic flora species in their natural habitat by reinforcing existing populations, a shade house was build in the Antigo Pomar das Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (orchard) for the production and growth of plants that will later be introduced into nature.
Since the beginning of the project, about a thousand plants have been propagated at this place, including species such as Rumex azoricus, Chaerophyllum azoricum, Spergularia azorica, Euphorbia stygiana ssp. stygiana, Angelica lignescens and Azorina vidalii, as well as shrubby species such as Holly (Ilex azorica), Laurustinus (Viburnum treleasei) and Buckthorn (Frangula azorica). Soon, the first propagation of Ammi trifoliatum and Asplenium hemionitis will take place.
With the introduction of these species in nature, the populations of endemic endangered species will be significantly reinforced, thus contributing to their conservation.
The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project aims to restore around 1,500 hectares of land area and conserve 19 species of flora, promoting the improvement of the conservation status of habitat and species present in the Habitats and Birds Directives.
