Congratulations to the Flores Island Biosphere Reserve!
May 27, 2022
Biosphere Reserves are marine and/or terrestrial ecosystems areas recognised by the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as areas of global importance for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development, which should serve as priority areas for the implementation and demonstration of these practices.
Flores island has held this classification since 2009, as a result of the decision of the International Coordinating Council, meeting in Jeju, South Korea, in the same year. This international recognition covers the entire island and its surrounding marine area.
This treasure in the Atlantic contains unique landscape, geological, environmental and cultural values at regional, national and international levels. The Biosphere Reserves are tools for sustainable development based on the harmonious relationship between man and nature. This relationship is very evident in the landscapes of Flores.
