European Day of Parks
May 24, 2022
Today marks the European Day of Parks! A date that promotes various activities and events in all of Europe's Protected Areas to promote the natural areas and raise awareness of the local community for the conservation of spaces of ecological interest.
A nature park is a category of protected area with natural, semi-natural and humanised landscapes of national interest, whose objectives are to conserve and enhance biological diversity and promote harmonious interaction between Man and Nature.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change joins this commemoration through the Azores Nature Parks, which act as coherent and sustainable management bodies of the Archipelago's terrestrial and marine Protected Areas, classified under the categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with the aim of enhancing their landscapes, habitat, geosites, remarkable species and other elements of environmental interest.
Therefore, and under this year's theme “We are Nature - Rethink, Restore, Reconnect”, this Regional Secretariat developed on 21 May a set of activities that involved the community in the conservation of the Region's protected areas, through the removal of invasive species, walks with observation of fauna and flora species and visits to energy power plants.
