May 23, 2022
The management team of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project went o São Jorge island for a meeting with the main local stakeholders, namely the Forest Services and the Ribeira Seca parish council, within the sub action Ecosystems Based Adaptation demonstration project to address extreme climate change (C5.3).
Through this team, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change has analysed and monitored some of the fieldwork on this stream. It has also talked with residents of the riverside area who have already suffered damage to their homes in previous extreme weather events.
An internal training session was also carried out for the field operatives’ team in situ and ex situ on native and exotic flora, techniques for combating invasive flora, and mechanical and personal protective equipment.
The visit culminated with a new inspection of Ribeira Seca on a day when it rained about 70L/m² in the area, allowing the identification of the most probability of overtopping points and considering which nature-based solutions to apply in each location.
