May 23, 2022
On the European Maritime Day, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, received the final report of COOL Açores – Clean Ocean Organizations Convention, written by 24 Azorean non-governmental organizations.
The document portraits the environmental problems that organizations consider to be the most urgent to solve and presents proposals for solutions that can guarantee the sustainability of the ocean, a key element in the social, cultural and economic development of the Archipelago.
“This is a key document for the Regional Government to make informed decisions and implement appropriate preventive and waste management measures to reverse the impacts of marine pollution. The contribution of the organizations that took part in COOL Açores made it possible to create this report, which provides us with detailed information on the most urgent problems and those considered to be priority resolution issues,” explains Alonso Miguel.
The Regional Government will analyse this document and the possible integrations of the solution proposals indicated, as part of its strategy to protect the Azores marine ecosystem, whose value and richness are unique worldwide.
The process that led to the conclusion of the final report of COOL Açores is indicative of the growing involvement of Azorean non-governmental organizations in the protection of their natural heritage and their commitment to mobilize the whole society to contribute to the future of the Region, which passes through the sustainability and protection of this inestimable treasure that is the sea of the Azores.
