Waste Management Division participates in a training session on biowaste management

May 16, 2022

The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, through the Waste Management Division, participated in the internal training session for environment technicians, namely for municipalities, inter-municipal associations and operators, regarding biowaste selective collection models, which took place on 2 May via Teams.

The session was given by the engineer Bárbara Rodrigues, responsible for the environment in the Resíduos do Nordeste system, with experience in the area and municipal conditions similar to the Azores. There were about 42 participants, being a moment of sharing between the systems.

The challenges posed to biowaste management are demanding and need the support and attention of all stakeholders of the sector in the Region to promote the complete cycle of materials, guarantee the quality of recyclable materials, produce a better-quality compost and return nutrients to the land (C and N), fostering the circular economy.

Circularity and Quality are two items that must be subject to technical, environmental and economic analysis, from collection to treatment, since this type of waste represents 36.2% of the production of urban waste in the Region.
