Planting endemic flora and reusing invasive flora biomass

Planting endemic flora and reusing invasive flora biomass

April 29, 2022

In the beginning of April, the LIFE BEETLES planted 60 specimens of endemic flora, mainly Azorean laurustinus (Viburnum treleasei), in Ribeira do Fundão, one of the project’s intervention areas.

This area, in particular, was previously covered with Wild ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum), a highly invasive plant. After cleaning and removing this and other invasive plants throughout the intervention area, the resulting vegetative material was triturated, and the biomass was used to cover the surrounding soil to the plantations, suppressing weeds and retaining humidity.
