International Mother Earth Day and National Geologic Heritage Day
April 22, 2022
Today we celebrate both International Mother Earth Day and National Geologic Heritage Day.
The International Mother Earth Day intends to raise the population’s awareness of the importance of preserving the planet where we live so that together we can improve human subsistence, fight climate change and halt biodiversity loss.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, together with the projects of the LIFE programme in force in the Region (LIFE VIDALIA, LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, LIFE BEETLES, LIFE IP CLIMAZ and LIFE SNAILS), of which is the coordinating beneficiary, implements climate change adaptation and mitigation measures and flora and fauna species preservation actions to o highlighting a better conservations status of habitat.
Simultaneously, the National Geologic Heritage Day aims to raise the population’s awareness of the recognition of the geological heritage value as an integral part of the natural heritage and motivate entities and the media to debate the geology’s role in today’s society.
Therefore, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, together with the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark, has available on the Azores Nature Parks’ YouTube page guided tours to four geosites, three of them of international relevance:
