Flores Nature Park celebrates its 11th anniversary

On 23 March 2011, the Flores Nature Park was created, through Regional Legislative Decree no. 8/2011/A, aiming at environmental management of the island's protected areas to preserve and value its natural heritage.

This park occupies approximately a third of the island's area and has several classified protected areas distributed by three Nature Reserves, one Natural Monument, three Protected Areas for the Management of Habitats or Species, one Protected Landscape Area and a Protected Area of Resources Management.

It also includes several areas classified under the Natura 2000 network, several Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas – IBAs of the BirdLife International organization, a Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention and six priority geosites of the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark.

On 27 May 2009, the island of Flores entered the World Network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, highlighting the environmental quality of the island and the existing harmony between the natural heritage and the local population.
