World Water Day

World Water Day

March 22, 2022

In 1993 the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development implemented World Water Day.

This year's theme is “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible”. The groundwaters are on aquifers – geological formations of rock, sand and gravel – which contain significant volumes of this good. In the Azores, groundwater is the main source of public water supply for human consumption. Some islands are almost entirely dependent on this supply, demonstrating the importance of groundwater resources in the Region. It is thus essential to protect these waters from pollution and to encourage their sustainable use.

Therefore, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change manages, elaborates and monitors instruments for planning and protection of water resources, such as the Regional Water Plan and River Basin Management Plan. Through the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, it also carries out monitoring actions and efforts to encourage the sustainable use of this resource as a way of mitigating and adapting to climate change.
