International Day of Forests
March 21, 2022
The International Day of Forests was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 21 March 2012.
The main goal of this date is to ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the multitude of benefits that result from this ecosystem essential for life and continue to exist the effort to promote the efficient maintenance and management of natural forest areas.
In this regard, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change intends to highlight the importance of forests to climate change mitigation and alert for the danger of its degradation.
The LIFE IP CLIMAZ, through the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources, project partner entity, has been encouraging the evaluation and quantification of the carbon sequestration potential of different types of forest in the Azores, using LiDAR technology. In addition, this project promotes the replacement of invasive species woodlands and marginal agricultural areas by plantations of native forests. These new areas, planted with native forests, are of great importance for regulating the water regime and water availability for human use.
