Cory's shearwater recovered and returned to nature

Cory's shearwater recovered and returned to nature

March 18, 2022

On 3 March, one Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) was found on the island of São Jorge with a lesion on its right leg. The local inhabitant who found the bird informed the São Jorge Environment and Climate Change Service, and the Park Rangers sent the bird to the Pico Wild Birds Rehabilitation Centre - CERAS.

The recovery process consisted of medication and vitamins administration, daily visits to the saltwater tank, rest and controlled feeding. When the hematoma on the leg healed, the bird was returned to nature on 14 March, in the same place where it was rescued to maximise the chances of finding its nest.
