Climb to Furna Abrigo
March 17, 2022
As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the classification of the Pico Mountain Nature Reserve, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change promoted on 13 March an activity consisting of an interpretative walk to Furna Abrigo.
The activity began with a brief initial lesson at the Mountain's House by the Director of the Pico Environment and Climate Change Service about the importance of local biodiversity and the code of conduct on protected areas. Afterwards, the participants climbed to Furna Abrigo with the guidance of the Park Rangers. During the walk, it was possible to observe rare flora endemism, such as Calluna vulgaris, Thymus caespititius and Daboecia azorica, that, over time, have adapted to the adverse conditions of the mountain.
Arriving at the destination point, the participants got to know the welded scoria cone, composed of a pit about 40 metres deep, and a gallery that served as shelter to the walkers who ventured up the mountain – the Furna Abrigo.
