March 3, 2022

The Regional Secretary of Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, met today, in Ponta Delgada, the Regional Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development.

For Alonso Miguel, "this is a consultative body that is very relevant for the governmental action in the field of Environment and Sustainable Development".

"It is a body open to society, which guarantees the right of public participation, ensuring a close dialogue between the Regional Government and the entities with activity or interest in issues related to environment and sustainability", emphasises the governor.

On the meeting's agenda, the proposal of the Waste Prevention and Management Strategic Programme of the Azores - PEPGRA 20+ stands out, which, according to the governor, "establishes the vision, objectives, strategic areas, goals to be achieved, aligned with those defined by the European Union, as well as the measures to be implemented in the framework of urban and non-urban waste for the Autonomous Region of the Azores".

The agenda of this ordinary meeting of the Regional Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development was also commented on the execution of the five LIFE projects underway in the Region and on the presentation of documentation on the list of coastal bathing waters for the year 2022.

The proposal of PEPGRA 20+ goes into public consultation on the 8 March and, as strategic objectives, has the prevention of waste production and its impact on the environment, the promotion of integrated and sustainable waste management and the efficient use of resources, constituting a fundamental pillar in the transition to a circular economy.
