Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change highlights the fundamental role of park rangers in the Azores

Feb. 3, 2022

The Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, highlighted today, on São Miguel, the role of the Azorean Park Rangers, arguing that “these professionals play a fundamental role in the monitoring, preservation and conservation of the natural heritage, as well as in the aspect of education and environmental awareness of the community”.
Alonso Miguel also emphasised, on this date that marks the National Park Ranger Day, that the Regional Government “cannot fail to stress its importance in the Region, recognizing, in its daily work, the first line of defence of the environment in each of the islands.
To also mark World Wetlands Day, the person responsible for the Environment and Climate Change portfolio highlighted that in the Azores there are “13 wetlands of international importance, which are the richest and most productive ecosystems in the world, in terms of biological diversity, having water as its structuring element”.
“It is in the importance of these ecosystems for biological diversity” that “the protection of the Environment and Climate Change works, carrying out various restoration, preservation and monitoring actions, namely through the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project”, added Alonso Miguel.
As part of the commemorations of the National Park Ranger Day and the World Wetlands Day, the Regional Secretariat will promote, next Saturday, several awareness-raising actions, which include the planting of endemic species, interpretive walking trails and observation of species of fauna and flora, added the governor.
The programmed actions can be consulted through the social media of the Azores Nature Parks and count on the presence of park rangers and young people participating in the Junior Park Rangers program.
Emphasizing the role of Park Rangers and young participants, Alonso Miguel stated that they are “a fundamental tool in promoting an active and participatory environmental citizenship, motivating our younger Azoreans to change their attitude and adopt environmentally sustainable habits and behaviours, from various actions developed in all the islands of the Azores, throughout the year”.
