Dec. 3, 2021
Between 20 and 28 November another Waste Week took place in the Azores, as part of the 13ᵗʰ European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change registered 96 awareness and information actions in all the islands, which involved 51 entities in the Region, including public administration, local authorities, private companies, waste management entities and operators, educational establishments, associations and non-governmental organizations for the environment and individual citizens, having been promoted 20 actions by this Regional Secretariat.
During one week, through the actions carried out, it was demonstrated the importance of reducing waste production and alerting the population to the need for a more sustainable consumption and a greater environmental awareness, as well as the importance of adopting attitudes that promote waste reduction and prevention. Distributed across the EWWR thematic areas, the activities developed touched on the most diverse themes, from which we highlight workshops on the use of food leftovers and sewing to reuse textile waste, composting workshops and courses, walks and bicycle rides involving waste cleaning actions, used goods fairs, exhibitions of furniture made from wood waste, door-to-door awareness-raising campaigns and also visits to Waste Processing Centres.
At European level, more than 12,489 actions implemented in 30 countries were registered, including Portugal, according to an EWWR press release.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, as the regional coordinating entity of this initiative, congratulates all those involved for their commitment, dedication and effort in this 12ᵗʰ Azores Waste Week.
