Did you know that… Santa Maria is the only island in the Azores where fossils of marine organisms can be found?

This happens because Santa Maria is the oldest island in the Archipelago and, throughout its geological evolution, parts of the island were submerged for long periods. During these phases, sedimentary deposits were formed, containing shells, corals, and remains of other marine organisms that are now fossils.
