Oct. 18, 2021

The Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, inaugurated, today, the walking trail that connects the Algar do Carvão to Furnas do Enxofre, with an extension of 6.6 kilometres and circular route, totally included on the Terceira Nature Park, integrated into the Planalto Central e Costa Noroeste Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species.

This new walking trail results from the work of the operational team of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change and allows for a pedestrian connection between the Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre Natural Monuments, offering magnific panoramic views of several geological formations and geosites, such as the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, the Pico Alto or the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara e Mistérios Negros, making possible to walk along areas of Laurel Forest and indigenous flora and also visit the Fumarolic Field of Furnas do Enxofre.

This pedestrian route also allows observing several ecologic and landscape restoration zones, namely areas intervened to eradicate invasive flora, areas of endemic flora plantations and recovery of degraded peatbogs.

According to Alonso Miguel, "this walking trail provides an exceptional opportunity, from a pedagogical point of view, allowing those who walk along it to observe the ecological restoration works carried out by the Regional Government of the Azores".

Furthermore, "all the structures on the trail were made with local wood, from the removal of exotic trees works, such as eucalyptus, for ecological and landscape restoration in this area", added the Regional Secretary.

"This trail is extremely rich regarding the diversity of the natural and environmental heritage, which enriches the Terceira and the Azores walking trails network, reinforcing the touristic offer and, above all, valorising, even more, the Region as a nature tourism destination", concluded the Regional Secretary.
