International Day for Biological Diversity
May 22, 2026
This year, the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity is "acting locally for a global impact".
The LIFE BEETLES project reflects this motto, improving and expanding the habitat, distribution area, and conservation status of three endemic beetle species – the Ground Beetle (Terceira island), the Ground Beetle (Pico island), and the Ironclad Beetle (Flores island) – also contributing to the strengthening of the ecosystems where these species are found and benefiting other components of the endemic fauna and flora.
In this context, this collaborative work constitutes a significant advance in safeguarding the biodiversity of the Azores, reinforcing the appreciation of our natural heritage and promoting a balanced and sustainable relationship between local communities and island ecosystems.
The LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, has ended, but you can continue to follow the maintenance work at www.lifebeetlesazores.com.
