Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action promotes activities in Pico island as part of the International Day for Monuments and Sites
May 19, 2026
Last April, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, through the Technical Office of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, promoted several activities as part of the celebrations for the International Day for Monuments and Sites 2026.
The programme included an interpretive walk in the area classified as a World Heritage Site, a webinar dedicated to the use, occupation and transformation of the protected area, as well as visits to the Volcanoes’ House and the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture Interpretation Centre. These initiatives resulted from a partnership with the senior universities of the municipalities of São Roque do Pico and Madalena, as well as with the Azores Geopark.
The activities aimed to raise awareness of the administrative procedures associated with building, conservation, or alteration works, as well as to promote reflection on the resilience of cultural heritage and the adoption of proactive attitudes in its adaptation and safeguarding, in the face of an increasingly unpredictable climate.
