REINFFORCE2 organises an event for World Tree Day

April 22, 2026

On 23 March, we celebrated World Tree Day with a tree-planting event at Pasto dos Trevos, in Furnas, as part of the REINFORCE2 project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.

The initiative involved students from the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ponta Delgada Vocational School (MEP), accompanied by teachers and experts from the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, with the support of the Azores Geopark.

Following the gathering at the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, a walk took place to the site of the planting, where specimens of endemic species such as the Azorean Cherry (Prunus azorica), the Firetree (Morella faya) and the Azorean Holly (Ilex azorica), as these are best suited to the local soils and climatic conditions.

The REINFFORCE2 project aims to identify forest species that are more resilient to climate change through an international network of trials, which includes the Azores.

This initiative also provided an important opportunity to raise environmental awareness, highlighting the importance of reforestation and the conservation of endemic species in adapting to climate change and protecting the Lagoa das Furnas catchment area.

Small gestures, big impact on the future!
