International Exhibition ‘Textile Cartographies’ – a commitment to textile waste prevention
April 15, 2026
On 12 April 2026, the exhibition hall at the Waste Processing Centre hosted a conference featuring speakers from Mexico, Japan, Spain, Canada, Egypt, Brazil, Italy and Portugal, as well as the opening of the exhibition Textile Cartographies – Acts of Repair, Stories that Circulate, an international project linking art, communities and sustainability through a square of fabric.
The exhibition Textile Cartographies, which brings together around 1,400 squares created from textile waste sourced from various islands in the Azores and other countries, such as Brazil, Canada, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Egypt, Spain, Latvia, symbolises the connection between communities, territories and sustainable practices, demonstrating that the reuse of waste can also be a form of cultural and collective expression. The exhibition features around 430 fabric squares from São Miguel, Terceira, Faial, São Jorge and Corvo, created by schools, parish councils, associations and individuals. Each square has transformed waste into a memory, showing that circularity can also be embroidered.
This event was organised through a partnership between the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, APECV (Association of Teachers of Visual Expression and Communication) and Resiaçores, as part of the INTERREG MAC TEXTIL: Weaving a Sustainable Future project.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Faial Waste Processing Centre – Resiaçores, from Monday to Saturday, between 9h and 16h, until 30 May 2026.
