LIFE IP CLIMAZ: Monitoring of species planted in Ribeira do Testo

March 25, 2026

As part of sub-action C5.3 – Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, which aims to promote the adaptation of riparian ecosystems to extreme weather events and strengthen the resilience of watercourses, the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, monitored the endemic species planted in Ribeira do Testo, located in the parish of Porto Judeu, on Terceira. This work allows the evolution of plantations to be assessed over time and their survival rate to be determined.

The monitoring carried out revealed very positive results: around 90% of the individuals introduced survived, presenting an adequate phytosanitary status and active growth. These data highlight the effectiveness of the renaturalisation actions carried out on this stream.

Continuous monitoring is essential to assess the impact of interventions and to collect information that will enable future actions to improve riverine ecosystems, thereby strengthening the Region’s resilience to climate change.
