March 18, 2026

As part of the monitoring of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, the fifth monitoring visit to the project took place between 28 and 30 January on the island of Terceira.

In addition to the coordinating beneficiary, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, the project’s associated beneficiaries were also present, namely the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources and Spatial Planning, the Regional Directorate for Energy, the Regional Directorate for Maritime Policy, the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Action, the Municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, the Municipality of Horta, EDA – Eletricidade dos Açores, and Cooperativa União Agrícola, CRL. The meeting was attended by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, the Project Advisor of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), Bernd Decker, and the external monitor of the ELMEN agency, João Salgado.

Over the three days of work, participants presented the main results achieved to date, discussed technical and administrative aspects, and conducted field visits to various project areas.

As part of these visits, technical trips were made to some investments and intervention areas on the island, namely the São Brás Native Species Forest Nursery and the orchards of endemic species in Barraca and Canada Larga, as well as areas designated for the conversion of pastureland and invaded forest into endemic and native forest, namely Canada Larga, Carregadouro and Pico Maunto.

The commission also visited the sections of Ribeira Grota das Oito, Ribeira do Testo, and Ribeira do Tapete where work has been carried out to clear the riverbed, control invasive vegetation, plant endemic and native species and, where necessary, implement nature-based solutions to reinforce the stability of the banks and, consequently, increase their resilience to extreme weather events.
