Students from EBI Ponta Garça visit Nascente do Galego as part of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ

March 11, 2026

Last December, as part of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, the Municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, as an associated beneficiary of the project, promoted two awareness-raising activities in two schools, EBI Ponta Garça and EBS Armando Côrtes Rodrigues, dedicated to the work carried out at the Mãe de Água and Galego springs, both located in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, on the island of São Miguel.

The activities were structured in two distinct moments. The first included a presentation by Eng. Pedro Teiga, designer at Erios, who, in conjunction with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), raised awareness among school communities about the importance of water, the preservation of natural resources and the ongoing refurbishment work at these springs.

In the second part, the students participated in the first planting action in the Nascente do Galego intervention area, alongside a group from the Escola Básica Integrada de Ponta Garça. The initiative was also attended by a local councillor, reinforcing the connection between the community, the school and the territory.

The restoration of the springs is guided by a sustainable development strategy that applies nature-based solutions (NbS) to strengthen the ecological functions of these ecosystems and increase their resilience to climate change.

With the financial support of the LIFE Programme of the European Union.
