Conservation work progresses on Faial under LIFE IP AZORES NATURA
Feb. 27, 2026
As part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, the Faial Environment and Climate Action Service team recently carried out new conservation actions aimed at restoring native vegetation and strengthening the protection of local ecosystems.
The interventions included:
• Removal of invasive species, namely Hedychium gardnerianum colonies;
• Planting of endemic species, such as Azorean Holly (Ilex azorica) and Azorean Buckthorn (Frangula azorica), increasing the diversity and density of native flora;
• Extension of the existing fence, ensuring greater protection for the plantations and creating additional space for future introductions.
To date, dozens of native plants have been planted, both in the area adjacent to Caldeira and in Charcos de Pedro Miguel, contributing to the recovery of habitats and the enhancement of Faial’s endemic flora.
