Feb. 25, 2026
The Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA), under the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, is organising a public event to mark World Civil Defence Day on Friday, 27 February, in Angra do Heroísmo. The event will include awareness-raising activities and a demonstration of operational resources.
The initiative will be attended by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, who will accompany the planned activities, visit the exhibition spaces and meet with participating agents and entities, emphasising the importance of prevention and preparation, and the need to promote a safety culture among the population.
As in previous editions, the SRPCBA is organising this initiative, which combines information sessions and demonstrations, with a special focus on earthquakes and collapsed structures. In this context, awareness-raising activities are planned on the contents of emergency kits and basic first aid, earthquake drills and the simulation of intervention scenarios in collapsed structures.
Throughout the day, about two dozen agents and entities within the regional Civil Protection system will be present, with activities distributed across themed spaces and stands, including operational demonstrations, equipment and vehicle demonstrations, and awareness-raising activities in their respective areas of expertise. The initiative intends to promote preventive behaviour and reinforce a safety culture among the population.
Among the participating entities are the Fire Brigades of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, the Municipal Civil Protection Services of the two municipalities of Terceira Island, the Armed Forces, the Public Security Police, the National Republican Guard, the Portuguese Red Cross, as well as various regional services and departments, amateur radio associations, among other partner entities.
Although the event is officially marked on March 1, the date established by the International Civil Defence Organisation, the celebration was brought forward to encourage participation from the school community and reinforce awareness-raising activities aimed at younger people.
The World Civil Defence Day celebrations, promoted by SRPCBA, are open to the general public and will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Terceira Island Multisectoral Pavilion in Vinha Brava.
