LIFE IP AZORES NATURA moves forward with conservation work on Faial

Feb. 6, 2026

The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project continues to strengthen ecological restoration actions on the island of Faial, under Action C4. 1 – Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats, having carried out another intervention in the conservation area, with the planting of 15 Azorean Holly trees (Ilex azorica) and 15 Azorean Buckthorn (Frangula azorica), consolidating the ongoing effort to recover native vegetation.

At the same time, the Pedro Miguel ponds continue to be restored, now with 32 Azorean Buckthorn, 40 Azorean Laurel (Laurus azorica) and 12 Azorean Holly trees.

In addition to the plantings, the fences protecting these areas were repaired after vandalism caused damage. Replacing the barriers is essential to protect native species and prevent livestock from accessing priority habitats.

In the coming months, it is planned to reinforce the intervention area by adding more native and endemic tree species. At the same time, the remaining planting will be allocated to the Pedro Miguel ponds, contributing to the gradual and sustainable recovery of these habitats of high ecological importance.
