Planting of native and endemic species on the islets of Graciosa

Planting of native and endemic species on the islets of Graciosa

Feb. 2, 2026

As part of actions C3.2 – “In-situ conservation” and C6.1 – “Islet restoration” of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, native species were recently planted on the islets of Graciosa, to strengthen natural populations and restore the coastal habitat.

Baixo Islet

•    6 specimens of Euphorbia azorica

Praia Islet

•    6 specimens of Crithmum maritimum

•    28 specimens of Myosotis maritima

These plants were produced at the Faial Botanic Garden (JBF), which acts, through the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, as the central nursery for the Azores botanical conservation network, responsible for propagating native and endemic species from seeds collected in declining natural habitats. After a technical process of germination and controlled growth, the specimens are reintroduced into their places of origin, such as the islets of Graciosa, thereby directly contributing to population reinforcement and the ecological restoration of sensitive coastal areas.
