Biodiversity as an asset for businesses in the Azores

Biodiversity as an asset for businesses in the Azores

Nov. 4, 2025

At the invitation of StartUp Pico, the LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, attended the ‘Sustainability in Digital’ event held on the island of Pico, where it presented its main nature conservation actions.

This participation was an excellent opportunity to publicise the work carried out under Action C.5 - Volunteering and Land Management, which has been mobilising the local community to protect native ecosystems.

The project currently has three active nature stewardship agreements and runs a volunteer programme focused on controlling invasive species and planting endemic trees in its intervention areas. To date, around 6,600 trees have been planted and more than 850 kg of invasive flora removed, contributing significantly to the recovery of the island’s natural habitats.

Azorean companies have a unique opportunity here to position themselves as agents of positive change, integrating nature conservation into their social and environmental responsibility strategies.

By supporting conservation projects — whether through partnerships, corporate volunteering or logistical support — they not only reinforce their commitment to sustainability, but also actively contribute to the enhancement of natural heritage, one of the Region’s greatest assets.
