International Day for Biosphere Reserves
Nov. 3, 2025
A Biosphere Reserve is a territory recognised by UNESCO in which a balance is promoted among nature conservation, sustainable development and the well-being of local communities.
To mark this occasion, here are some interesting facts:

...in the Flores Island Biosphere Reserve, known as ‘the westernmost territory of Europe’, there are some of the largest waterfalls and lakes in the Azores, making this territory a true natural sanctuary of water and biodiversity.
...the Corvo Island Biosphere Reserve was a pioneer in launching the SOS Cagarro Campaign (although it was recognised and made official in 1995, brigades had already been formed in 1991 to rescue these birds on Corvo), and since 2020, all public lighting on the island has been turned off during the most critical period of the campaign?
...around 25% of the Cory’s Shearwater rescues carried out during the SOS Cagarro Campaign take place in the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve, where nature and the local community work together to preserve marine life.
