Today, it’s all about sharing knowledge at the Ciência Viva Centres
June 13, 2025
It’s like a game of musical chairs, but the objective goes far beyond having fun. On 26, 27 and 28 June, the Ciência Viva Centres are changing management. The ‘Today I’m in Charge’ initiative is back, taking the mobility of the Ciência Viva Centres Network across the country and challenging the teams to inspire visitors with different programmes.
A science show, activities in which microorganisms are the protagonists and art stimulates imagination and creativity, programming with a computer that fits in your pocket, or a walk to observe nocturnal insects are just some activities that the Ciência Viva Centres are preparing.
Rosalia Vargas, Director of the Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva Centre, crosses the Atlantic to the historic island of Faial in the Azores. She’s bringing something new to the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre - CCV: the launch of the 9th edition of the Ciência Viva Journeys Guide, which includes the new Faial Journey. The event is scheduled for Friday, 27 and will be attended by Alonso Miguel, Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action.
The Living Science Centre, dedicated to the volcanology of the Azores and the world, is also hosting workshops on topics such as microplastics or the biochemical reactions that occur during cheese production, as well as hands-on projects exploring the engineering of a lighthouse. Jorge Buescu, Mathematician and Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, joins the programme with a lecture on the number pi (π).
To Lisbon comes the CCV team from Faial, which is bringing the geodiversity of the Azores to the Pavilion of Knowledge, focusing on the activity of the Capelinhos volcano. Is basalt all there is on the volcanic islands? How are fossil replicas created? These and other questions will be explored over three days of scientific experiments that will ‘shake up’ the Pavilion. Because this mobility is also part of the tradition, A Cozinha é um Laboratório will be preparing bolo lêvedos, a speciality of the Azores, particularly the island of São Miguel.
The ‘Today I’m in Charge’ initiative is an opportunity to learn the dynamics and challenges of a network that wants to be more cohesive. The hard part... will be unpacking it!
