José Manuel Bolieiro evokes the life and work of the researcher Frederico Machado, in a ceremony on Faial

Today, the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, congratuleted the "life and work" of the professor and researcher Frederico Machado, honoured and evoked on the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, on the municipality of Horta.
"This is a moment that promotes justice, that fights oblivion, that ensures recognition", marked José Manuel Bolieiro in his speech on the tribute session to a man that "give universal dimension to the Azores, to the Country, to thought and science".
Frederico Machado was a recognised specialist in the Geology and Geophysics areas, with immense work on the Azores Archipelago.
Although he was already honoured in past circumstances, "it is necessary to guarantee a constant presence of such figure" on the common mind, defends the President of the Government.
"It is a day that will last; it will not be just this ceremony and evocation. I feel the enormous satisfaction of public entities being able to make present and future the past that honours us, that makes us proud, stimulates and inspires”, he added.
To José Manuel Bolieiro, the tribute to Frederico Machado is "appropriate and fair", remembering that "his science helped save hundreds of people".
Frederico Machado, deceased in 2000, was a college professor and engineer, an emeritus professor at the University of Aveiro, who distinguished himself in the volcanological research of the Azores and the tectonics of the Azores-Gibraltar Fracture Zone.
He taught Introduction to Higher Mathematics, Topography and Geodesy, Seismology, Volcanology and Geophysics, among other subjects.
