LIFE IP CLIMAZ organises activity in partnership with the São Jorge Environment and Climate Action Service

June 4, 2025

Last March, an initiative was organised to plant endemic species on the island of São Jorge, promoted by the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, with the collaboration of the São Jorge Environment and Climate Action Service and in partnership with the National Scout Corps of the island of São Jorge. This initiative was also part of the global ‘Trees of the World’ project.

The activity took place in Ribeira Seca, one of the project’s intervention areas, with the main aim of raising awareness among the scouts of the importance of biodiversity and preserving the Azores’ endemic species while also emphasising the fundamental role of riverside ecosystems in mitigating the impacts of climate change.

In a dynamic and educational environment, several endemic species were planted, such as Picconia azorica (Azorean Picconia), Viburnum treleasei (Azorean Viburnum), Vaccinium cylindraceum (Azorean Blueberry), Myrsine africana (African Boxwood) and Ilex azorica (Azorean Holly).

This action proved to be an enriching educational experience in the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve. In addition to the opportunity to involve young people in promoting and publicising the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, the initiative also encouraged active participation in protecting the Azores’ biodiversity.
