DRAAC continues works to recover and restore the bed of the Ribeira do Testo on Terceira

May 29, 2025

As part of sub-action C5.3 - ‘Essay/demonstration of Ecosystem-Based Adaptation to face Extreme Weather Events in Inland Watersheds’, which aims to adapt riverine ecosystems to extreme climate change and increase the resilience of water lines, the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, in partnership with the Terceira Island Environment and Climate Action Service, and with the support of the Orçamento Participativo dos Açores programme, continued the work begun in 2023 at Ribeira do Testa, on Terceira island.

One of the most recent milestones was reached at the beginning of March this year, with the completion of the stream’s cleaning and removing invasive vegetation and waste. A 650 metre-long fence along both banks was also completed to prevent livestock from accessing the stream bed and thus prevent damage to the plantations.

As part of this redevelopment, 834 specimens of endemic species were also planted, totalling 3270 plants along the entire stream in an area of approximately 13,500 m2.
