Planting of endemic species in the urban park of Vila do Porto
May 27, 2025
On 7 May, the LIFE SNAILS project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action in partnership with the Municipality of Vila do Porto, carried out an endemic species planting activity in the urban park of Santa Maria, with the active participation of the local community.
The initiative brought together 16 participants and aimed to promote natural heritage, combat habitat fragmentation, enhance environmental awareness, and strengthen the island’s ecological identity. A total of 180 specimens of Azorean native species — Erica azorica, Picconia azorica and Myrica faya — were planted, contributing to ecological restoration efforts and raising awareness of the importance of conserving endemic flora in urban spaces.
This action reinforces the commitment of the LIFE SNAILS project to biodiversity conservation and community engagement in building more sustainable and resilient territories.
