International Day for Biological Diversity
May 22, 2025
Today we celebrate a date that invites us to reflect on the importance of all forms of life on Earth – from the most iconic species to the simplest, from terrestrial ecosystems to marine environments.
In the Azores, this day holds special significance, as we live in a Region of remarkable natural wealth, home to species found nowhere else in the world and to 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘴 that deserve to be known, respected, and protected.
Biodiversity is the foundation of life, essential for the planet's balance and for human well-being. It plays a vital role in the stability of ecosystems and in providing essential resources such as food production, air and water purification, and climate regulation. Preserving biological diversity is not only an ecological duty, but also a social and economic responsibility.
The biodiversity of the Azores is a unique natural treasure, with ecosystems and endemic species that reflect the isolation and ecological richness of this archipelago.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action marks this occasion by reaffirming its commitment to nature conservation, with ongoing projects such as LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, LIFE SNAILS, and LIFE IP CLIMAZ. These projects will be present today at the 2nd edition of the Biodiversity Day Celebrations, promoted by the Municipality of Ribeira Grande, featuring a panel of speakers with recognised expertise and knowledge in this field, with a special focus on the biodiversity of the Azores.
May this day inspire us to value life in all its forms. Because protecting biodiversity is protecting our future.
