LIFE IP CLIMAZ project carries out restoration work at Ribeira de Santo Antão
Feb. 21, 2025
As part of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, ecological restoration work was carried out on the Santo Antão Stream, located in the parish of Santa Cruz, in Praia da Vitória. Coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, the interventions are part of sub-action C5.3 - Demonstration Project of Nature-Based Solutions for Adaptation to Extreme Climate Events.
This intervention aims to control invasive vegetation, plant endemic species and, whenever possible, implement natural engineering solutions. The aim is to reinforce the stability of the stream's banks, promote the adaptation of this ecosystem, increase the resilience of the watercourse, and prevent erosion and the risk of flooding and landslides.
Work was also carried out to clear and remove invasive species, creating the conditions for the subsequent planting of endemic species adapted to the existing ecosystem. The planting took place in November, with around 200 specimens of the species Azorean Picconia (Picconia azorica), Azorean Laurel (Laurus azorica), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica) and Azorean Viburnum (Viburnum tresalei) being planted.
