LIFE IP CLIMAZ trains workers in Natural Engineering Techniques in an Insular Context for the rehabilitation and restoration of Ecosystems

Feb. 5, 2025

At the beginning of November, the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project held two specialised training sessions on Nature-Based Solutions in an island context, focusing on ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration. These actions, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, took place on the island of São Miguel between 11 and 13 November and on the island of Terceira from 13 to 15 November, with a total of 51 trainees.

The aim of this theoretical and practical training was to improve participants' knowledge of the main characteristics of natural engineering techniques. These techniques were highlighted for their low environmental impact, symbiosis with the landscape and potential to increase the resilience of watersheds and waterlines.

In the practical component, the trainees were able to test techniques such as the reuse of plant waste at the intervention site, the containment of invasive species, and the design and construction process of natural engineering solutions adapted to an island context with volcanic soils and steep slopes.

The workshop focused on introducing concepts and the practical application of natural engineering techniques, with special emphasis on stabilising the banks of waterlines subject to active erosion processes.
