SRAAC organises environmental education activities as part of the SOS Cagarro 2024 campaign

Dec. 6, 2024

Another edition of the SOS Cagarro Campaign took place between 1 October and 15 November, an initiative coordinated by the Regional Directorate for Maritime Policy (DRPM), with the collaboration of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action (SRAAC). This campaign, which has been held annually since 1995, aims to protect Cory's Shearwater, one of the Azores' most emblematic seabirds.

During the campaign, SRAAC organised various environmental education activities, such as theoretical and practical sessions, release sessions for rescued birds, STOP operations and night brigades to rescue birds. In total, 161 actions were carried out, involving 3,036 participants and organisations such as the PSP, GNR-SEPNA, DRPM, Public Library-Reading Club, Scouts and Casa de Providência de São José. In addition to participating in the activities, the community's involvement was also reflected in using the SOS Cagarro Hotline, with a 64 % increase in incidents reported compared to 2023.

We thank everyone involved for their commitment, dedication and participation in the SOS Cagarro Campaign.
