Nov. 21, 2024
At the beginning of October, the São Miguel Nature Park Advisory Board held a meeting in which the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project participated.
On this island, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project is working in the area of Lagoa do Fogo and Serra da Tronqueira, carrying out conservation work to improve the state of habitats and species considered to be priorities under the Birds and Habitats Directive.
Since the start of the project, 1494 herbaceous species have been planted, and 6406 m³ of biomass of alien species have been removed in the Lagoa do Fogo intervention area. An early warning was issued about an invasive species in this area, and the species detected (Youngia japonica) has been removed, while the São Miguel Environment and Climate Action Service is implementing a monitoring plan.
Concerning environmental education actions, 16 volunteer sessions have been held since the start of the project, involving 254 participants. Most of these actions were centred on controlling invasive species in Lagoa do Fogo and Pico do Carvão, with the participation of several volunteers from European schools.
