Prospecting the Western Group

Prospecting the Western Group

Nov. 18, 2024

Over the summer, a team from the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Action travelled to the islands of Corvo and Flores to survey some of the sites where there are nuclei of the target species of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, to check the state of the intervention areas on this island and to collect seeds.

During this visit, it was possible to collect seeds of the project's target species and detect new populations of endemic and native species.

On both islands, an invasive species that caused some concern was detected, Rhaphiolepis indica, found on cliffs and develops competitive behaviour with native species. Some researchers were asked to clarify this species.

These visits are essential for assessing the state of the intervention areas and the impact that conservation work is having on local ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as adjusting the conservation strategy implemented for native species and protected habitats.
