Work to remove invasive species in Lagoa Rasa

Work to remove invasive species in Lagoa Rasa

Nov. 13, 2024

To preserve one of its target species, the Tarphius floresensis, the LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, has planned actions to recover the habitat of this species. One of the ways to do this is to remove invasive flora species, such as Kahili Ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum). The complete removal of this plant, including its roots, is the most effective way of eliminating it.

Along the road near Lagoa Rasa, on the island of Flores, the high level of invasion is noticeable, so the invasive plants were removed using a mechanical digger. This removal, carried out in conjunction with the Municipality of Lajes das Flores, which provided the machine and the operator, made it possible to quickly and effectively remove a large quantity of the invasive species, thus helping to recover this natural heritage site of the Azores, Lagoa Rasa.
