LIFE IP AZORES NATURA monitors plantations in Lagoa do Fogo

Oct. 12, 2024

As part of action D5.1 ‘Monitoring terrestrial habitats, species and conservation problems’, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, in collaboration with the São Miguel Environment and Climate Change Service, monitored plantations of endemic and native species in the Lagoa do Fogo intervention area on the island of São Miguel.

This continuous and detailed monitoring process is essential to verify the success of the interventions and ensure that the habitat restoration targets are being met. We check the growth of native plants, mortality, the resurgence of invasive alien species and other threats that may arise.

In short, monitoring is not just one stage of the project, but a fundamental component for long-term success. Continuous monitoring ensures that the investments made in habitat restoration, both in the Lagoa do Fogo intervention area and other areas, generate the expected results for the ecosystems while allowing for methodologies to be reassessed and adjusted if necessary.

The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project monitors not only this site, but all its intervention areas where conservation work is being carried out, in order to ensure the success of the actions carried out by the project.
