Natural Monument of Algar do Carvão

With 39,34 ha, this is a volcanic chimney, that contrary to what usually occurs, is not completely blocked by either fills or landslides. With the presence of large geodiversity and biodiversity associated to protected species and habitats, there is a profusion of  siliceous formations very developed, of rare occurrence in the oceanic volcanism and the occurrence of endemic cave fauna, as exemplified by the Trechus terceiranus (endemic scarab of Terceira Island). Integrates the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) of Serra de Santa Barbara e Pico Alto within the Natura 2000 Network and Ramsar site - Planalto Central da Terceira.
