Nature Reserve of Pico da Vara


The Nature Reserve of Pico da Vara, is located in the east zone of São Miguel island, has an area of 7,86 km2 and includes the highest point of São Miguel island with 1105m. In terms of habitats, we highlight the meadows dominated by Deschampsia sp. appearing on the tops of mountains and Laurissilva Forest consisted of Erica azorica (Tree Heath), Vaccinium cylindraceum (Azorean Blueberry), Juniperus brevifolia (Juniper) and Laurus azorica (Azorean Laurel). In terms of fauna there is the presence of the Azores Bullfinch (Pyrrhula murina), an endemic bird of São Miguel island, once common, which saw its geographical distribution restricted to the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação.
