Nature Reserve of Lagoa do Fogo

The area is classified as a Nature Reserve since 1974. Currently a protected area of 5.07 km2, the Lagoa do Fogo is located in a central position of São Miguel. The volcanic caldera, where is the Lagoon, corresponds to the collapse of the caldera of the strata-volcano crater of Fogo. The slopes are steep and covered with natural forest with an abundance and diverse endemic flora. The Lagoon water feeds a few springs located on the slopes. Despite the distance to the sea, nest in the area, the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) and Yellow Legged Gull (Larus michahellis atlantis).
